Neanderthals bonded tools with a binder made from birch tar or resin. Ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Greeks glued wood, leather, papyrus, made and decorated furniture thanks to adhesives. They used gelatin glues made from animal skins, casein glues obtained from milk, and bone and fish glues. Adhesives made from the protein of hen's egg whites were also known and used. The Romans made glue from animal skins by boiling them for a long time. Waxes and tars were also used, mainly for gluing and sealing boats and ships.
