HIGH PERFORMANCE STRUCTURAL BONDING WITH OUR WELDYX® BRAND.
The broad product portfolio offers solutions for standard applications and special bonding, from high strength to flexible, from black to transparent, from low to high temperature.
WELDYX® is the right answer when it comes to bonding different substrates. The bonds are permanently durable and resistant to chemical substances, a wide range of temperatures and high vibrations. The bonds have high strength combined with high elongation at break. The selection of user-friendly containers also guarantees a problem-free and quick integration of WELDYX® products into your company's processing procedures.
WELDYX® MMA adhesives offer a good combination of tensile strength, peel strength, impact resistance and elongation at break. The properties can be classified between the impact-resistant polyurethanes and the high-strength epoxy resins. WELDYX® impresses with its speed of application and short set-up times.
While methyl methacrylate adhesives (MMA for short) were widely used industrially in the USA in the 2000s, this class of adhesive was still in its infancy in Europe at the same time. GLUETEC was one of the first companies to introduce MMAs in Germany and make them available to the masses in small container sizes. As a pioneer from the very beginning, GLUETEC has been part of the rapid success story of these adhesives, which have now become an established class of adhesives in industrial companies throughout Europe and the world.
MMAs score points with their wide range of applications, their good adhesive properties and their convenient processing. In addition, no complex pre-treatments are necessary when using them. MMA adhesives are designed for industrial use. Protective equipment is necessary during processing and this class of adhesive releases a strong odour. After complete curing, MMAs are considered harmless and convince with very good adhesive bonds.
Methyl methacrylates are among the most powerful reactive adhesives available for the structural bonding of two parts to be joined. For industrial applications, they are usually available as a two-component system in which the hardener component, an organic peroxide, is added in the correct ratio to start the chemical reaction. The reaction between accelerator and peroxide leads to a radical polymerisation of the monomeric MMA, whereby extremely long molecular chains are formed. These are the basis of the outstanding internal strength (cohesion) of the adhesive bond.
MMA adhesives are adjusted in their reaction speed to different processing times of 1 to 120 minutes, within which two substrates must be joined at the latest. Structural bonding with MMA adhesives usually requires a minimum gap of approx. 1 mm and allows maximum gap bridges of 6 mm.
The mixing ratio of resin and hardener can be adjusted or set by the chemist during the so-called formulation. Common mixing ratios are 1:1 or 1:10, more rarely 1:2 to 1:4. Correct mixing in the final application can only be ensured by using a static mixer.
Advantages of MMA
- Excellent adhesion to numerous substrates: Organic and inorganic substrates (e.g. wood, glass), high and low energy plastics (e.g. PVC, PMMA).
- High tensile shear strength combined with high elongation at break
- Low pre-treatment and cleaning effort, no priming necessary
- High chemical stability against greases, oils, acids, solvents
- High thermal stability up to 205 °C
