Rennschmiede Pforzheim

Rennschmiede Pforzheim is the Formula Student team at Pforzheim University. With the RSP26 Aquamarine, the team is developing its thirteenth racing car, the ninth vehicle in the ‘Gemstone Saga’ and its sixth electric car. In the 2026 season, the car is set to compete in FS Czech, FS Austria, FS Germany and FS France.

Application on the rear wing

The application focused on the main element of the rear wing. Here, several lightweight components were permanently bonded together: parts made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), including ribs constructed using a sandwich structure with core material between the fibre layers, as well as PETG bolt-on fittings at the ends of the element. An epoxy matrix was used for the CFRP components.

Requirements for modern structural bonding

This application clearly illustrates what is crucial for modern structural bonding in lightweight construction: different materials, sophisticated construction methods and an aerodynamically significant vehicle component whose bonded joints must, in service, primarily withstand shear, tensile and compressive loads.
