Shear rate is a term from fluid mechanics that describes the rate of shear in a flowing fluid. It is defined as the speed at which adjacent layers of a fluid move relative to one another. In other words, shear rate indicates how quickly layers of fluid move past each other.

In adhesive technology, the shear rate is taken into account when designing the static mixer in order to select it optimally for use.
