corrosion

Corrosion is a natural process in which metals are broken down through chemical reactions with their environment. There are many different types of corrosion including galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. It can lead to deterioration of the metallic surface, possibly resulting in structural damage or loss of function.

Corrosion occurs in many applications such as construction, ship and aircraft manufacturing, automotive and electronics. There are many methods of preventing corrosion including the use of protective coatings, sacrificial anodes, alloys and special plating processes.
