Solvent based adhesives
Solvent-based adhesives are a type of adhesive based on organic solvents. These adhesives usually contain resins, polymers and other binders dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone, toluene or ethanol.
Solvent-based adhesives have advantages in many applications due to their fast drying time and strong adhesion. They are particularly suitable for bonding materials such as paper, cardboard, wood, plastics or metals. However, they can also have disadvantages: The organic solvents can emit high amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can affect the environment and health. For this reason, there are now strict regulations and guidelines on the use of solvent-based adhesives in industry and crafts.
To minimise the disadvantages, solvent-free and water-based adhesives have been developed in recent years, which are a more environmentally friendly alternative. However, solvent-based adhesives still have their justification due to their strong adhesion and short drying time and are used in many applications.
